ASIAN CORNER MALL

BEHIND THE ASIAN CORNER MALL INSTALLATION

Asian Corner Mall had been incredibly significant to my life since I had been a kid. My mom would shop for clothes back when the shops were still open. It would then become a place for cheap haircuts and guavas. In 2019, I would go on to document the mall as part of my Industrial Hellscapes series. Following the documentation, it would serve as a place for solace during one of the most difficult times in my life. I would get used to the routine of ordering banh mi from Le's and listening to my OSINT podcasts on the benches. A very lonely period but one that was soothed by the existence of a building so liberating.

Then on January 1st of 2023, the news hit me that Asian Corner Mall was shutting down. Immediately, I knew I had to make something to honor its memory.

My friends and I were all devastated to hear of its closing and even more that the building was going to get redeveloped. I decided then that I would create a piece commemorating this and every other building I lost to gentrification and redevelopment. Dead Moon was a result of this process.

In late January, the mall was officially shut down by the fire department. What would follow would be constant scouting, looking for entry points and potential ways in. I had decided that the only way to ever do this project justice was to adorn the walls of the building with my work. The project would then end up becoming the guerrilla gallery that is documented below.
